Winter Daily Driving Dos and Don’ts

European Auto Repair Ann Arbor

We’ve all thought it before as we drive during Michigan winters: “Has that person
ever driven in the snow?!”

There are a few important things to remember as you set out on the road so you aren’t one of the people others are questioning.

Slow down

We all know it’s important to slow down when the roads are slick, but that’s not just your rolling speed. Increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you so you can gently brake when you need to. This will help you avoid an accident. Being gentle with your acceleration can also help increase your traction and control.

Clear those windows

It’s hard to see without clearing your windows properly. Clearing your windows all the way around your vehicle is so important! Even on frigid cold mornings when you’re tempted to skip it, removing ice and snow gives you the best ability to see what’s happening around you, so you can respond quickly. For those vehicles that come with an automatic start, setting your controls to defrost can help start the clearing process before you have to scrape.

Fill your fluids

Check your fluid levels before the weather starts getting cold and pay close attention to your anti-freeze and your oil since those two are heavy-duty workers in the winter. Other good ideas include using windshield wiper fluid that’s rated for cold weather – you don’t want that to freeze – and keeping your gas tank at least half-full to prevent that from freezing in the lines.

To ensure you get where you're going safely this winter, read more here!

Bring your Subaru BRZ into ArborMotion

Subaru Service Ann Arbor

Subaru is known for its rugged all-wheel-drive cars, designed to last and not for flash. This normally practical exterior trend was completely shattered in 2012 with the introduction of the Subaru BRZ. With a sexy silhouette that’s anything but typical for a Japanese company, the BRZ has helped the brand change its perception across the globe.

The Subaru BRZ was first introduced in North America in 2012 at the North American International Auto Show, making a huge splash in the automotive world alongside the extremely similar Scion FR-S.  Produced at Toyota’s Ota Gunma, Japan assembly plant, the 2-door sports car is still the first of its generation, offering a sports car for an extremely reasonable price.

*Its name comes from 3 different elements: B for Boxer engine, R for Rear-wheel-drive, and Z for zenith

*Can reach 0-60 in an estimated 6.2 seconds

*Only available in rear-wheel-drive, which is a departure from Subaru’s normally all-wheel-drive vehicles

Bring your Subaru BRZ into ArborMotion

For more than 30 years, ArborMotion has been Ann Arbor’s Import and Domestic Auto Repair specialist. Our technicians are specially trained on the individual brands they service so their knowledge and experience works for you. Paired with our OEM and factory parts, ArborMotion’s got the expertise.

Things to Consider While Your Vehicle Sits

Your vehicles probably aren’t getting a lot of use right now. Even if you don't depend on your vehicle, you should still get out and drive it. You may be asking yourself why? Isn’t that a waste of gas? No. Vehicles need exercise just like living things or their systems atrophy.

These are the top four things you should be worried about when your car sits for a long period of time:

  1. Battery
  2. Brakes
  3. Engine oil
  4. Tires

Hitting the Apex By: Nick Pott

Nick, Pott, Shop Manager
Happy New Year everybody! I am sure by now most of you have made a resolution, and have all the intentions of making 2019 "The Year of (Insert Name Here)!" I say good on ya! Do whatever you gotta do to make yourself happy and whole. Whatever it is, make it hapn' Capn'! I just ask one favor. Whatever you decide to do, or not do, own who you are. Don't lie to yourself about who you are. No one is happy doing that. Also, don't blame life's shortcomings on others. Chances are no one is buying it. We are all adults here people, act like it! I am just kidding of course, do whatever you want. Who am I to tell you otherwise? I am certainly not qualified to criticize or coach anybody, with the exception being of course car repair and/or race car advice. For those things, I am your guy! 2019 is gonna be a great year folks, and I am looking forward to our monthly chats!

"Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne..........."

Can Potholes Cause Accidents?

Living in Michigan, potholes are a regular occurrence. If you’ve ever driven with someone from Michigan, more than likely if they hit a pothole you’ll hear an audible “I’m sorry” come out of their mouth. Not an apology to the other passengers, but to the vehicle!

Depending on how deep or how wide it is, a pothole can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. This can cause an accident!
foreign car repair ann arbor

A lot of us have become expert pothole drivers; dodging them is a Michigan specialty. But did you know that potholes can cause huge problems to your vehicle? Even if you manage to keep control when you hit one, significant damage can be done to your vehicle’s shocks and struts, which can cause components of the suspension system to break, the steering system to become misaligned, and even cause damage to the exhaust system and wheels.

When driving, make sure that when you do see a pothole, slow down and, if you can, drive around it. Make sure you’re also aware of the other vehicles on the road because they may also be watching out for that same hole! Especially this time of year, with ice on the road, potholes can become a huge danger.

Slow down, check your surroundings for other vehicles, and either drive very slowly through (if hole is small enough) or drive around! ArborMotion is always more than happy to service your vehicle if a pothole comes out of nowhere. The next time you aren’t able to drive around a pothole or it’s deeper than you thought, bring your vehicle to ArborMotion and we’ll inspect it for you to make sure you have not done any damage to your baby!

Hitting the Apex!

By: Nick Pott

Happy November to all you Hitting the Apex fans! Let's talk a little bit about weight this month. Why weight? Well, the holidays are a time where weight always seems to matter. From “what size turkey did mom get,” and “how much does that package cost to ship?” to “how much potato salad should I bring?” or “oh my god I ate too much and now my pants are too tight,” weight is inherently on our minds in November and December.
foreign car repair ann arbor
Nick Pott, Shop Manager

We should probably be glad we aren't in England when pounds are all they talk about when shopping! Even kids are concerned with weight. "Mom, his wrapped gift is heavier than mine and that isn’t fair!” Parents know what I'm talking about. This is also the time of year that race car builders and drivers are concerned with weight. "What can be made lighter?" and "where can we distribute weight better?" are topics heard in garages where grown men and women argue about things that physics has already dictated for us.

The general rule in race cars is to go for the lowest weight and a neutral center of gravity – low and in the middle. This is true for passenger cars as well; not necessarily the overall weight, but too much weight in the car or unevenly distributed weight can make your trip to Grandma’s house more than a little challenging. Put five adults in your sedan and your car will take longer to accelerate and to brake and will make it harder to turn (this is known as "pushing" in racing). Be careful this holiday season when you’re going to visit family and friends. Is eating five pounds of turkey at dinner going to affect your car ride home from Mom's? No, but 175 pounds might, so don't pick up that hitchhiker after dark on the side of the highway. That’s how horror movies start, and I like all my readers.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!

How to Winterize your Car

Winter is coming! Cold air, the holidays, snow…it’s all fantastic. But for your vehicle, it could be a nightmare. You take care of yourself during the winter, and you should be doing the same with your vehicle. Making sure it’s all wrapped up snug and warm (for your seasonal car). For your everyday car, you need to make sure that it’s ready for whatever winter throws its way.

The first thing you should do is check your battery. When the weather gets very cold, your battery won’t store power as well as in warm weather. At the same time, your engine requires more power from your battery than normal in cold temperatures. This could lead to waking up one cold morning to a vehicle that doesn’t start! Before the nasty cold weather hits, take your vehicle to ArborMotion and have our technicians run a battery load test to see if your current battery needs to be replaced.
foreign car repair ann arbor

Next, change your wiper blades and refill your washer fluid. With all the salt on the roads, your windshield wipers can get a buildup that interferes with their ability to wipe your windshield clean. Having clean new wiper blades with fresh washer fluid makes it easier to wipe away any grime and salt.

Many people have summer and winter tires. Living in Michigan means that at some point we’ll be getting a foot of snow, and most of us need tires we can rely on to get to work or school. Winter tires are made with softer rubber than all-season tires, allowing them to retain flexibility below 45 degrees which is where the all-seasons lose theirs. This means that the winter tires have much better traction and stopping ability than their counterparts. Winter tires really do transform your vehicle, even ones with all-wheel drive. Winter tires have tread patterns on them that are specifically designed to grip in snow and ice so while they won’t magically make your car avoid all slips and slides, they do provide much better traction and stopping ability.

If you chose not to replace your tires with winter tires, make sure to check your tire pressure. Cold weather causes air pressure to drop. When there’s a ten degree drop in the temperature, your tire pressure will drop 1psi. Having your tires inflated properly helps them connect better to the road.

If your vehicle has all-wheel drive, make sure to bring it to ArborMotion to have our technicians make sure that it’s working correctly. This will help you maintain better traction in ice and snow.

Checking your anti-freeze is a big help when it comes to winterizing your car. Anti-freeze makes sure that your coolant stays in great shape. Anti-freeze keeps your radiator from freezing in low temperatures in the winter and from overheating in the summer.

Make sure you top off your windshield washer fluid to prevent a buildup of salt, dirt and grime on your windshield. This is something that you’ll want to check periodically throughout the winter to make sure you don’t run out!

Be sure to stock your vehicle with emergency supplies! You never know when a big storm is going to hit or when black ice will appear. Include blankets, boots, flashlights, jumper cables, roadside flares, non-perishable foods (i.e. granola bars, protein bars), ice scraper, first aid kit, water bottles, shovel and any other items that could come in handy!

Make sure to get your oil changed regularly and to have the technicians at ArborMotion check your belts and hoses. You want everything in your vehicle running in tip-top shape. Our service advisers would be happy to chat with you about winterizing your vehicle. They’ll be happy to help make sure that you and your vehicle stay safe this winter season.

Welcome to "Hitting the Apex!”

porsche service ann arborWelcome to "Hitting the Apex!” This is the first monthly blog where you’ll hear from me, Nick Pott, the Shop Operations Manager at Arbormotion. I’m the General Manager of Rennstatt Racing, the performance division at Arbormotion. We focus on high performance vehicle maintenance and repair, specializing in the Porsche marque.

As the title of this blog represents, racing, specifically auto road racing, is a huge part of my life, and my first life passion. "Hitting the Apex" refers to the practice of putting your car in the best position on the race track when going through a turn. Hitting apexes equals speed and good lap times. I have missed many apexes in my racing career, and I have the lap times to prove it. This blog will not be solely focused on racing, rather a variety of information, thoughts, rants, inside info in car repair, and general musings of all things related to cars and car repair.

Hope to see you the next lap around!

August Car of the Month – Steve Tinkle (motorcycle)

This month, we’re going outside of the box! We’re featuring a motorcycle! Our fellow shuttle driver, Steve Tinkle, owns the “Car of the Month”.
foreign car repair ann arbor
Steve purchased his Kawasaki in the Spring of 2017. He grew up riding motor cross and street bikes. When he had kids, he put a pause on riding. When his kids grew up, Steve got the urge to buy another bike … and the rest is history!

Kawasaki named this model, “Versys,” which stands for “Versatile System.” Steve says this bike lives up to its name! He uses this bike as a commuter bike but also loves to take it down twisty dirt roads and trails. The Versys can definitely bring out the bike lover in you!

Steve’s best memory happened the first week he owned the Versys. He was riding down a road that was closed due to flooding – a stream had nearly flooded the road and was running across it for about two hundred feet. He decided to go for it and the gamble it paid off! The bike worked perfectly!

The next time you visit ArborMotion look for Steve’s bike in the parking lot and feel free to talk to him! Motorcycles are definitely a different “species” around here, so getting to check one out is a treat!

July Car of the Month

This month we're going old school! Meet Joe Planck, he’s one of ArborMotion's Porsche Specialists. He graduated from the Washtenaw Community College Automotive Program.
Joe owns a 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate. He purchased this vehicle right after graduating from high school in 2014. Joe has a love for wagons, which is why he was drawn to the Roadmaster! This car is old school on the outside but packs in many awesome features.
porsche service ann arbor
This Buick was the last American rear-wheel-drive V8 body on a frame station wagon (one of the many reasons Joe loves it). Other features include: a LT1 Corvette engine, rear facing third row seat, dual action tailgate (swings open like a door or down like a tailgate), moon roof (only two Buicks and Oldsmobiles had this feature), wood grain, swapped leather interior from a Sedan, dual passenger bucket seats with Chevy Blazer, lowered in the rear with Impala SS Springs (with helper air bags for heavy loads), 18" wheels, wildwood front brakes, true dual exhaust with cat delete and flow master mufflers plus plenty of space for people or cargo.
This car definitely packs a punch! It’s a favorite here at our shop. You can always spot Joe driving it down State St. because it stands out. Next time you're at ArborMotion, take a look! It's parked in our lot when Joe’s at work. Feel free to say hello to Joe in the Porsche Department.

How to Protect Your Car’s Interior in the Summer

As we all know, the changing seasons take a toll on our vehicles. The hot sun can ruin your paint, and salt can accelerate the appearance of rust. While all of this is happening to the outside of your vehicle, do you stop to think about the effects the seasons have on the inside?
foreign car repair ann arbor
The summer heat can turn the inside of your vehicle into a sauna! When the door opens, heavy, hot air will surround you.

Want to know how to make your car cooler? These helpful tips will make sure your vehicle will be almost as cool as your A/C!

One inexpensive way to cool down your interior is to park in the shade as much as possible. This will prevent the sun from shining directly into your vehicle … which will help with the inside temperature and help protect your paint at the same time. If shade is limited where you work or live, a windshield protector is a fantastic way to create some. These come in various sizes and shapes, so finding one that fits your vehicle should be a breeze! They also sell whimsical ones if a solid color doesn’t tickle your fancy.

A lot of vehicles have leather interiors, which is very nice visually, but our leather-seated friends know the pain of sitting down in shorts. Seat covers are a great way to keep your leather interior in great condition and helps it keep cool. We can also all relate to hot steering wheels -- covers for those are also available!

For those of us with children or pets, window shades are a great purchase. They help keep your vehicle cool while also protecting your little ones.

Speaking of pets -- they need our help staying cool during the summer months as well. Besides air conditioning and window shades, one purchase that could be beneficial is a seat cover that turns your backseat into a bench! Not only does this protect the seat’s longevity, it provides more space for your four-legged friends. Caution: your furry friends should never be left in a hot car. These are suggestions on how to stay cool as you travel.

This summer has been brutal! No one wants to spend their time in a hot car. If you choose one of these ideas to protect the inside of your vehicle, your car will thank you. Protecting your vehicle means you’re not only protecting yourself, but also the people and pets that go with you.

The Sound Reasoning Behind a Pre-Purchase Inspection

There are many ways to check out a car before you buy it. You can go online and check the Carfax status, or look on Edmunds.com or Cars.com and make sure the amount you offer is within the range of market value. You can even research common issues a vehicle may have and compare that to the Carfax report to see if it has ever been serviced for that issue.
The one thing you can’t do online is a good old-fashioned physical inspection by a certified technician. A “Pre-Purchase Inspection” can be the best money you will ever spend. Some people are afraid to have the inspection done in fear that nothing will be wrong with the vehicle and they spent the money “unnecessarily.” The truth is exactly the opposite. You want to learn that the car needs nothing so you’ll have confidence when you buy it.
foreign car repair ann arbor
If defects or service needs are found, then you can use that info in two ways. If the vehicle ends up needing too much service, then you dodged a bullet – which is money well spent. If it only needs minor service but still looks to be a good vehicle (which is what happens most often) then you’re armed with the knowledge of what needs to be done to get the car up to your standards. You can then negotiate the sale accordingly.
Often, we do a “Post-Purchase Inspection” which can sometimes be very bad. We have inspected vehicles numerous times that were purchased first and then brought to us only to find that the vehicle needs so much work that it’s not worth doing, or it exceeds the value of your vehicle. This scenario is what makes the first scenario we described (Pre-Purchase Inspection showing the car needs nothing) the best possible outcome with no need to be afraid of spending the money.
Bottom line: if you’re considering purchasing a vehicle, bring it to ArborMotion for an inspection by our ASE certified technicians that will either save you money, save you from a huge mistake or give you the confidence that the vehicle you’re considering is a sound purchase. Make it a win-win no matter the outcome.
