Kid Getting a New Car? Don’t Skip the Pre-Purchase Inspection

mechanic performing a brake repair

Handing over the keys to your teen’s first car is a big milestone. It’s exciting… and a little nerve-wracking. Whether you’re buying from a private seller, dealership, or even a family friend, a pre-purchase inspection is one step you simply shouldn’t skip.

We’ve seen it all when it comes to used vehicles. A car may look spotless on the outside, but what’s happening underneath the hood (or under the vehicle) tells the real story.

Why a Pre-Purchase Inspection Matters

A professional inspection gives you peace of mind before money changes hands. During a comprehensive inspection, our technicians:

  • Check for hidden mechanical issues
  • Inspect brakes, suspension, and steering components
  • Scan for warning codes or electrical faults
  • Look for fluid leaks or signs of deferred maintenance
  • Evaluate tires, alignments, and overall road-worthiness

For European vehicles in particular, small issues can turn into expensive repairs if overlooked. Choosing trusted European auto repair in Ann Arbor means working with specialists who understand the unique systems and maintenance needs of these vehicles.

Selling a Car? Protect Yourself Too.

If you or your family is selling a vehicle — maybe upgrading or downsizing — a pre-sale inspection can be valuable. Providing documentation of a clean bill of health builds trust with buyers and can help justify your asking price. Transparency makes the transaction smoother for everyone involved.

Peace of Mind for Parents

When your child is heading off to college or starting a new job, reliability matters more than ever. A thorough inspection ensures their vehicle is safe, dependable, and ready for daily driving. If your teen is getting a new car, schedule a pre-purchase or pre-sale inspection with our experienced team and drive forward with confidence.

Call today to book your inspection and make sure that “great deal” really is one.

Start/Stop Technology: Good News—It’s Easier on Your Engine Than You Think!

start stop system lit up on dashboard of a car

If you've recently driven a newer vehicle, you've likely encountered start/stop technology—this feature turns your engine off when you’re stopped at a red light and restarts it when you hit the gas. While it’s designed to boost fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, it often leaves drivers wondering:
Is this constant stopping and starting bad for my engine?

The short answer? No, not at all! In fact, it’s a lot gentler on your engine than you might think. Let’s clear up some common concerns and explain why this smart tech is nothing to worry about.

Start/Stop Myths—Busted

Myth #1: “All that stopping and starting must wear out the engine faster.”
This is probably the most common concern, and we totally get it. It seems intuitive that more starts = more wear. But vehicles equipped with start/stop systems are built for this. They use reinforced starters, upgraded batteries, and advanced lubricants to handle the load.

Myth #2: “It’s annoying and can’t be good for my driving experience.”
The first few times you feel your engine shut off at a red light, it might catch you off guard. But modern European cars execute start/stop transitions smoothly, making it virtually seamless. In many cases, you won’t even notice it. It gives your engine a short break—like a quick breather—saving you fuel.

Myth #3: “It probably doesn’t help much anyway.”
This technology can improve fuel economy with city driving by 5-10% and significantly reduce idling emissions. That’s good for your wallet and the environment!

Proper Maintenance is Key!

Just like any part of your car, the key to a healthy start/stop system is routine maintenance—especially for European vehicles with finely tuned systems. That’s where we come in.

Learn more about the components of your engine and what every driver should know here.

Taking Care of Your Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes repair Ann Arbor

What does it mean to take care of your Mercedes-Benz? What’s the service schedule for your Mercedes?

Schedule A

You’ll see the Schedule A notification regularly. That notification for your Mercedes Benz lets you know that your vehicle is ready for an oil change. Along with the oil change, there’s a multi-point inspection that we perform, as recommended by Mercedes.

Schedule B

This service schedule notification will come up approximately every 20,000 miles. This service includes an oil change, cabin and engine air filter replacements, a brake fluid flush, and a multi-point inspection. The brake fluid flush is necessary because moisture can build up in the brake lines over time, which can impact your braking ability.

Schedule C

You’ll see this maintenance reminder least often in your Mercedes Benz. Schedule C service is an oil change, multi-point inspection, changing of the wiper blades, and a computer-based scan of your vehicle for an overall health check. When we perform your Schedule A and Schedule B services here at ArborMotion, we’ll keep an eye on your wiper blades and perform all necessary maintenance checks. As a result, you’re less likely to see a Schedule C reminder.

Winter Daily Driving Dos and Don’ts

European Auto Repair Ann Arbor

We’ve all thought it before as we drive during Michigan winters: “Has that person
ever driven in the snow?!”

There are a few important things to remember as you set out on the road so you aren’t one of the people others are questioning.

Slow down

We all know it’s important to slow down when the roads are slick, but that’s not just your rolling speed. Increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you so you can gently brake when you need to. This will help you avoid an accident. Being gentle with your acceleration can also help increase your traction and control.

Clear those windows

It’s hard to see without clearing your windows properly. Clearing your windows all the way around your vehicle is so important! Even on frigid cold mornings when you’re tempted to skip it, removing ice and snow gives you the best ability to see what’s happening around you, so you can respond quickly. For those vehicles that come with an automatic start, setting your controls to defrost can help start the clearing process before you have to scrape.

Fill your fluids

Check your fluid levels before the weather starts getting cold and pay close attention to your anti-freeze and your oil since those two are heavy-duty workers in the winter. Other good ideas include using windshield wiper fluid that’s rated for cold weather – you don’t want that to freeze – and keeping your gas tank at least half-full to prevent that from freezing in the lines.

To ensure you get where you're going safely this winter, read more here!

Car Maintenance & Service Checklist!

European auto repair Ann Arbor

Not only does your car perform at its best when it’s properly maintained but keeping up on maintenance maintains your resale value.

Consider this scenario: you’re in the process of buying a car and you find two that you like and you’re trying to decide which one to buy. One has complete, up to date service records, and the other has a few random oil change receipts in the glovebox. All else being equal, most people will opt for the car that has been properly maintained and would likely pay more for it.

To properly maintain your car, make sure that:

  1. Oil change and other scheduled maintenance is up to date.
  2. Tire condition and air pressure is checked regularly.
  3. All exterior lights are working.
  4. Windshield wipers are wiping clean across the windshield.
  5. A/C and heat are in good working order.
  6. Engine coolant is fresh and topped off.
  7. Proper wheel alignment. No one wants to go on a trip and fight their steering wheel!

How can you keep your car clean? It won’t stay clean forever, but we can help you stay on the right track!

The best thing you can do is stick to a regular schedule. If you want to save money on car washes, give your car a coat of wax to protect the paint! It won’t stop dirt, but will help rain bead on your car and keep it from looking dirtier than it is.

If you live on a dirt road, you should rinse your car off after every drive. Not only will this keep your car looking cleaner but you'll be removing harmful dirt and grime.

If you want an impressive detail done on your car, call Total Detail located at ArborMotion today at  (734) 929-9688 or schedule your appointment online here!

Short History of Mercedes-Benz Early Day’s

Mercedes repair Ann Arbor

Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to Karl Benz’s creation of the first internal combustion engine in a self-propelled car. The Benz Patent Motorwagen was financed by Bertha Benz’s dowry and brought into existence by Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach’s conversion of a stagecoach by the addition of a petrol engine. The Mercedes automobile was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler-Mootoren-Gesellschaft (DMG).

Emil Jellinek, the European automobile entrepreneur who worked with DMG, created the trademark in 1902, naming the 1901 Mercedes 35 hp after his daughter Mercedes Jellinek.  Jellinek was a businessman and marketing strategist who promoted “horseless” Daimler automobiles among the highest circles of society.  His customers included The Rothschild family and other well-known personalities. But Jellinek’s plans went further: as early as 1901, he was selling Mercedes cars in the New World, to notable figures including US billionaires Rockefeller, Morgan and Taylor.

At a race in Nice, France, in 1899, Jellinek rode under the pseudonym “Monsignor Mercedes”, as a way of concealing a competitor’s real name. The race ranked as the hour of birth for the Mercedes-Benz brand. In 1901, the name Mercedes was registered by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschat (DMG) worldwide as protected trademark. The first Mercedes-Benz brand of vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler’s companies into the Daimler-Benz company on June 28, 1926.

Fast forward to today, and the Mercedes-Benz brand is worth an estimated at $21.35 Billion US dollars. It is considered one of the most valuable luxury automobile brands in the world. The luxury and refinement of a Mercedes-Benz is unrivaled.

Tips for Navigating The Secretary of State in Michigan at this time:

The Secretary of State offices have reopened. To protect their staff and public health, offices will only provide services by appointment, and only offer critical services that can’t be completed online, by mail or at a self-service station. Advance appointments become available six months ahead of time.

Same-day appointments become available 24 hours before an appointment time. Many transactions can be completed from home by mail or using online services. Vehicle registration tabs can be printed immediately at any of the Secretary of State’s convenient self-service stations.

The following five transactions can be scheduled and completed in person:

  • Driver's license
  • State identification cards
  • Title Transfers
  • Testing
  • Seasonal commercial vehicle renewals

Customers also have the option to schedule an appointment to complete two or more transactions at one time. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation that temporarily extends the expiration dates of all Michigan driver’s licenses, state ID’s and vehicle registrations through September 30, 2020. Up Your Game & Prepare for Winter Roads!

Winter is officially upon us and with that being said, you need to make sure all your vehicles are in tip-top shape.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you stay ahead of the game.

First and foremost, make sure your battery is in great working condition. No one wants to come out to their car not starting during a snowstorm. ArborMotion can do a battery test to make sure that your battery can “weather the storm” (see what I did there?)!
domestic service ann arbor

Make sure your gas tank is always at least half full. With Michigan snowstorms, traffic is bound to get crazy. Whether you’re on the highway or taking the backroads home, running out of gas while stuck in traffic or during a storm is never a good thing.

Good items to have in your trunk or backseat are a small shovel and (surprisingly) kitty litter. During the winter, you may experience your tires getting stuck in snow or spinning on ice. Kitty litter provides great traction and gives your tires something to grip (also, an extra pair of boots and a blanket!).

Finally, make sure to get your vehicle checked for winter. Brakes need to be checked, tires need to be inspected, and fluids need to be topped off. Having your vehicle in tip-top shape for the winter is a must. The weather in Michigan is so unpredictable, one day it could be sunny and 50 and the next day we have one foot of snow with sleet coming down!

ArborMotion is ready to make sure that all of our customer’s vehicles are prepared for whatever winter has to throw at them. Remember to keep things slow this time of year. Prepare to add additional travel time and make sure to keep safe distances between you and other vehicles.

How to Organize your Car for Back to School

School is right around the corner! For some of us, it has already started. To make life easier for moms and dads, here are some ideas on how to organize your vehicle to make sure pick up and drop off are a breeze!

Car organizers are great to have on hand. In these organizers you can keep snacks, changes of clothes, diapers, wipes and other things you need close at hand. With little ones, you never know what they’ll come home looking like (Jell-O everywhere!) so having wipes and extra shirts can come in handy! Snacks are a good idea, too! Rushing out the door in the morning, you may forget to pack a snack for the kids and sometimes you forget to pack something for yourself. Throw in some granola bars, dried fruit and even trail mix.
european auto repair

Sometimes traffic dictates your entire afternoon, and no one likes being stuck in a car for very long, especially your little ones. Have some activities ready to keep your kiddos engaged and busy so time flies! In one of the car organizers, keep some art supplies like crayons, washable markers, and dry erase boards handy. Activities are also a plus!

Weirdly enough, a label maker is a great idea! Out of all the lunch boxes and backpacks in the world, there are bound to be at least 3 of the same ones bouncing around your child’s room. Put their name on their backpack and lunch box, this way they always come home with their items and not their friends stuff.

The easier it is for mom and dad in the morning, the easier it is for the kiddos! Lets make this school year the best yet!

Don’t Forget to Schedule Routine Maintenance on Your Car!

Regular maintenance and service allows us to diagnose issues before they become severe and possibly more expensive to repair. We specialize in European auto repair, but we also provide expert service on all major domestic brands including service and repairs on Ford, Chevy, Buick and Jeep. Give us a call or shoot us an email, we’re more than happy to make you an appointment today!

Women in Motorsport

We here at Hittin' The Apex take all Motorsports very seriously. Well, almost all. Drag racing and circle track racing are largely boring and silly to me. To anyone hating that statement, I have been in both of those arenas, and I make my judgement with first hand experience. Also I say this with a moderate amount of sarcasm. All venues of Motorsports have their value and help further the sport along, so I tip my hat to those boring events and their respective drivers. Getting back to the matter at hand, we take Motorsports very seriously. From safety to car prep, every aspect is vital down to the most minor of details. This includes the general overall image of Motorsports. Let's face it, if there is any negative image, be it stereotypes, or bad behavior my the sports "faces", it will turn people away, and we do not need, want or can we afford that. One of the biggest stereotypes and negative images we have is that Motorsports is a "man's sport" that "women should not be participating in". I use quotations because I have actually heard these statements a few times. What a load of bullshit. Like it or not, and it will be easier for everybody if you learn to like it, women are more than welcome, scratch that, needed in Motorsport. From officials (we in Motorsport call them Stewards because we are fancy) timekeepers, grid patrol, tech inspectors to most importantly, drivers, women keep the sport going. The first time I took my wife and step-kids to a race, it was at a 2015 SCCA Majors race at Mid-Ohio.in the third or fourth race of the day, right in front of us, a small formula car was spun out into the tire barrier and subsequently too damaged to continue. To my wife's and step daughter's shock, when the driver jumped behind the corner worker barrier and removed their helmet, a flowing lock of brown hair fell out and my step daughter asked "girls can race too??" My response was a simple "yes" and " why not?", to which there was no answer but a shrug. It was just assumed to someone who was never immersed in the culture that it was a male dominated sport. I cannot say this clearly enough, THIS IS A PROBLEM. Let's break down the argument that women do not belong on track. Is getting into a race car so complicated that women need male guided assistance to get in and out of? That would be a ridiculous statement to actually make. I hope no-one thinks like that. Are race cars harder to start? Some do not have keys but I am confident that any person male or female who cannot flip a series of switches and push a button should not be getting in a race car anyway. Are race cars harder to shift and steer? Well, yes, they are, but again to insinuate that a woman cannot perform these tasks is completely asinine and idiotic to even think about. Can a woman keep up the stamina to endure the hardships of a 45 minute race? While grueling depending on weather and other factors, anyone prepared enough health wise to operate a race can withstand these hard ships, regardless of gender. So that leaves mental capacity. Here we go, here is where I believe anyone who has a problem with women in Motorsport believes women are inferior. I am going to say this as clearly as I can. WOMEN ARE NOT MENTALLY INFERIOR AND THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC BASIS TO MAKE THAT GENERALIZATION. I apologize for yelling, I wanted everyone to hear that, even those in the back. Any example of any idiotic move on a race track that a woman driver made, I can show ten very similar moves made by men. Trust me on this, it will only benefit EVERYBODY if more women were to come out and play with us. I don't care if it is autocross, HPDE, time attack, road racing circle track or drag, whatever course you are on is and should always be a gender neutral playground. On a final note, to ANYONE who is afraid to "lose to a girl", you have already lost so much more than a race.

US-2 from St. Ignace to Manistique

This trip calls for a ride across the Mackinac Bridge, which is a sight in itself! The highway joins the Lake Michigan shoreline for several miles which allows for breath taking views. Locals stop along the way for picnics on the dunes and of course, swimming in Lake Michigan. Obviously, any trips to the Upper Peninsula call for an authentic pasty.

M-23 from Tawas City to Alpena

Considered Michigan’s “Sunrise Coast,” this trip offers up a Great Lakes setting. Lake Huron will be the main attraction for this trip, offering places for you to picnic and beautiful scenery. Alpena’s waterfront park is adjacent to the marina of the shores of Thunder Bay, making it a perfect stop.

M-22 from Arcadia to Frankfort

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a highlight of this trip! Start off your trip in Arcadia at the scenic turnout called Inspiration Point. Once you climb the steps, you’ll be able to witness a spectacular view from on top of the bluffs. Once you make it to Frankfort, grab a Michigan craft beer at Stormcloud Brewing Company and have a stroll along the pier to a lighthouse.

Take advantage of living in the Great Lakes State and make it a summer to remember! And let us, here at ArborMotion, make sure that your vehicle is in great condition for all of your summer fun. Contact ArborMotion today – we specialize in foreign car repair in Ann Arbor.

Power of Love By: Nick Pott

foreign car repair ann arbor

What is love? Baby, don't hurt me. Don't hurt me no more. Most people should by now have thought "Where have I heard that before?", and now that you have figured it out, nodding your head to the beat like the Saturday Night Live skit of the past. But lets talk about love for a minute. Love is everywhere. People love each other, they love their kids, their jobs and even their cars. I am not at all qualified to talk about love and what it is and why we love, but I am qualified to talk about love affairs with cars. Many, just love cars in general. Some love specific makes, some specific models even. There are car clubs for everything it seems. There are Miata clubs, Porsche clubs, BMW clubs, there is even a Chevy Caprice Club. Don't get me wrong, I love the enthusiasm, its all great! For me though, the love is not a make, or a model, it is what I can do with the car that I love. I LOVE TO DRIVE CARS. Not that I love to drive long distances, rather I love to drive cars on a performance basis. To make a sports car handle through turns the way it was designed, or point a big,  throaty V8 and put pedal to the metal baby I am there! The best feeling though, that I get with cars is when we make adjustments to get more out of the cars. To drive a Ford Mustang GT handling on the track like a dream, or a lowered and widened Porsche that makes everything it does right even better, THAT is when I am happiest and at my best. That is what I love about cars. Whatever you love about them, foster it! Until next time, keep that head nodding!

Ignore These Repairs and You May Get Pulled Over!

It happens to all of us, a turn signal goes out or a windshield gets cracked and we end up pushing it under the rug. These may seem innocent at the time, “I’ll fix it next time I’m in the shop!” but some of the things can get you pulled over or – even worse – get you a ticket!
foreign car repair ann arbor

Here are some items that should be addressed as soon as they come up, including:
  1. Turn signals, headlights and/or taillights that are cracked/broken or have burned out. The majority of states require all vehicles to have functioning turn signals as well as two working taillights and headlights. If your taillights are cracked, they can often give off a white light, which may also result in a ticket – they should always give off a red light.
  2. Cracked, discolored or tinted windshields may result in a ticket for the driver and possibly a fine.
  3. Make sure that your license plate is readable! Clean off the dirt, mud or anything that’s covering it. If the paint on the letters or numbers has come off, it’s time for a new one. Also, check and make sure your license plate light is properly functioning.
  4. Having a loud exhaust system can also result in a ticket or fine! Whether this was due to a modification or a repair, check with your state to see what they define as “loud.”
All of these may seem small and sometimes inconvenient, but these are a few of the skipped repairs that will get you pulled over! If you’re lucky, you might get off with a warning, but it’s better to be safe than sorry while protecting yourself and others on the road by making necessary repairs.

Can Potholes Cause Accidents?

Living in Michigan, potholes are a regular occurrence. If you’ve ever driven with someone from Michigan, more than likely if they hit a pothole you’ll hear an audible “I’m sorry” come out of their mouth. Not an apology to the other passengers, but to the vehicle!

Depending on how deep or how wide it is, a pothole can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. This can cause an accident!

A lot of us have become expert pothole drivers; dodging them is a Michigan specialty. But did you know that potholes can cause huge problems to your vehicle? Even if you manage to keep control when you hit one, significant damage can be done to your vehicle’s shocks and struts, which can cause components of the suspension system to break, the steering system to become misaligned, and even cause damage to the exhaust system and wheels.

When driving, make sure that when you do see a pothole, slow down and, if you can, drive around it. Make sure you’re also aware of the other vehicles on the road because they may also be watching out for that same hole! Especially this time of year, with ice on the road, potholes can become a huge danger.

Slow down, check your surroundings for other vehicles, and either drive very slowly through (if hole is small enough) or drive around! ArborMotion is always more than happy to service your vehicle if a pothole comes out of nowhere. The next time you aren’t able to drive around a pothole or it’s deeper than you thought, bring your vehicle to ArborMotion and we’ll inspect it for you to make sure you have not done any damage to your baby!
