Hitting the Apex!

By: Nick Pott

Happy November to all you Hitting the Apex fans! Let's talk a little bit about weight this month. Why weight? Well, the holidays are a time where weight always seems to matter. From “what size turkey did mom get,” and “how much does that package cost to ship?” to “how much potato salad should I bring?” or “oh my god I ate too much and now my pants are too tight,” weight is inherently on our minds in November and December.

We should probably be glad we aren't in England when pounds are all they talk about when shopping! Even kids are concerned with weight. "Mom, his wrapped gift is heavier than mine and that isn’t fair!” Parents know what I'm talking about. This is also the time of year that race car builders and drivers are concerned with weight. "What can be made lighter?" and "where can we distribute weight better?" are topics heard in garages where grown men and women argue about things that physics has already dictated for us.

The general rule in race cars is to go for the lowest weight and a neutral center of gravity – low and in the middle. This is true for passenger cars as well; not necessarily the overall weight, but too much weight in the car or unevenly distributed weight can make your trip to Grandma’s house more than a little challenging. Put five adults in your sedan and your car will take longer to accelerate and to brake and will make it harder to turn (this is known as "pushing" in racing). Be careful this holiday season when you’re going to visit family and friends. Is eating five pounds of turkey at dinner going to affect your car ride home from Mom's? No, but 175 pounds might, so don't pick up that hitchhiker after dark on the side of the highway. That’s how horror movies start, and I like all my readers.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!
