Keep the outside cool

As often as possible, park in a shady spot. You can feel the heat when you open your car doors. Can you imagine what your engine is feeling under that metal hood? Keeping the entirety of your vehicle as cool as possible is helpful for the longevity of internal components, keeping the paint beautiful, and keeping the interior of your the vehicle as comfortable as possible when you open the door to start your next drive.

Keep the inside comfortable

Leather seats are HOT in the summer, and we’ve all been burned by the hot leather at some point in our lives. Seat covers are your friend when the sun is beaming down. Be advised - seat covers reduce the effectiveness of air-conditioned leather seats! If you have air-conditioned seats, consider carefully starting your car, and letting it run for just a minute to let the AC cool things down before you sit.

Keep the radiator healthy

If you notice a sweet smell coming from your engine compartment and notice any puddles on the ground after you park, or if your dashboard engine temperature gauge seems high, call ArborMotion right away. Summer Maintenance Basics

We often think about prepping for winter by performing maintenance on our vehicles. But what about summer maintenance? There are things that should be done, even during the “easy going” warmer months!

Get your oil changed

Regular oil changes are among the most important maintenance jobs you can do. We talk about this all the time, and for good reason! This is just as important in the summer, when you’re more likely to go for a spontaneous cruise or weekend getaway. Having fresh oil running through your engine keeps everything properly lubricated and moving easily as you cruise down the road. 

Have your coolant checked

Having your cooling system in good working order is essential year-round. Your radiator will keep everything at the proper temperature so you don’t experience one of the most dreaded summertime issues - overheating. Making sure that your coolant level is correct and in good working order will help keep your vehicle happily driving along all day, and all night!

Check and recharge your air conditioning

Pack Your Summer Emergency Kit

We often think of emergency kits for winter, but it’s just as important to have one during the summer! Summertime is made for road trips and evening sunset drives, but can occasionally feature popped tire or overheating engine. It’s best to be prepared!

Some year-round necessities include:

• Jumper cables - if your vehicle won’t start, a jump can often get you back on the road, at least long enough to get to ArborMotion and have your vehicle checked out.
• Spare tire and jack - being miles from home and having a tire blow out can be a scary situation; it’s best to be prepared and then (hopefully) not need it!
• Phone charger - having your vehicle go out on you is bad enough, but don’t let your phone go out too! If you’re in a place that doesn’t have good reception, record the current time, your location, and any emergency steps you’ve taken as your outgoing voicemail message. Anyone that calls will receive your message, even if they can’t get through to you.
• Water and non-perishable snacks - these should be changed out with the changing of the seasons, to be sure they’re fresh and not expired.

Summertime emergency kit:

• Sunblock and bug spray - if you get stuck in a situation where you need to be outside the car, protecting yourself from the elements and bugs is a great idea.
• Umbrella/rain suit – It may not be safe to stay in the car after an accident or breakdown, even if it happens during poor weather. Keep a raincoat or umbrella in the car to help stay dry.
• Coolant - be sure you buy the correct coolant for your car. Having this on hand just in case your vehicle starts overheating or you discover you have a leak can be the difference between making it to your destination, or having to call a tow truck.

Summer drives can be an enjoyable time spent with friends and family, heading off to some fun adventure. By having an emergency kit prepared and well-stocked, you can set off knowing that even if your day goes sideways, you’ll be able to handle it easily!

• Matthaei Botanical Gardens – located at 1800 N. Dixboro Road, Ann Arbor - Walk through multiple gardenscapes, check out rare and non-native plants in the conservatory, and even reserve space to host events.
• Graffiti Alley runs from E. Liberty and E. Washington in Ann Arbor, halfway between S. State Street and S. Division Street. A local spot of interest with ever-changing artwork, graffiti alley is often used as a backdrop for photo shoots.
• Nichols Arboretum – located at 1610 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor, the “arb” is a local favorite that features many hiking trails! From the peony gardens blooming in the spring, to wide hiking trails along the Huron river and the summertime Shakespeare in the Park series, there’s always something to do. 
• Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum – located at 100 East Cross Street, Ypsilanti – have a fun afternoon in this museum looking at both rare and unique cars, both locally built as well as from further afield.

• Gilmore Car Museum located at 6865 W. Hickory Rd, Hickory Corners – Many people in southeast Michigan are familiar with the Henry Ford Museum but are completely unaware of the Gilmore Car Museum. This gem has over 400 vintage and collector vehicles and motorcycles.
• Frankenmuth, Michigan - This town is the home of Bronner’s and Zehnder’s as well as beautiful Bavarian-style architecture, fun shopping, festivals all summer long, and a number of museums. Your day trip could easily turn into a weekend getaway!
• John K. King Used & Rare Books located at 901 W. Lafayette Blvd, Detroit - One of Michigan’s largest used bookstores, this shop boasts four floors and literally a million books. Those in the know bring lunch with them and arrive early. The parking lot is small and they pack as many vehicles safely in as possible. For book lovers, it’s easy to spend a full day engrossed in the ever-changing collection.

Maintenance and Used Vehicle Sales

When it’s time to buy a new vehicle, you’re looking for a quality vehicle at a good price. You probably already know what you’re looking for in terms of seating and cargo space, as well as price. But have you considered quality of care?

Vehicle A:

This vehicle is what you’re looking for and looks to be in good shape. No dings or dents. It sounds like it runs smoothly. It’s been freshly detailed and is nice and clean. The price is right for what you want to spend. But…the seller only has sporadic paperwork from some of the oil changes they’ve had done. For everything else, you’re going to have to take their word.

Vehicle B:

This vehicle is also nice. The body is solid, without rust, and the handling and braking are as you’d expect. The size and price are what you’re looking for, and the seller has paperwork from oil changes and recommended maintenance. You can easily verify that the brakes are relatively new. The tires are a brand you recognize and were installed last season. 

Which vehicle are you going to spend your money on? For either vehicle, we highly recommend scheduling a pre-purchase inspection to have one of our specialists make sure you’re getting a vehicle that will last for many more miles. Vehicle B clearly has some added assurance that it’s been properly cared for, and that’s where we would invest our money if we were buying a vehicle!
