All About Battery Registration

European auto repair Ann Arbor

Do you have a MINI, BMW, Audi, or Volkswagen that needs a new battery? Have you been told that it needs to be registered before it is installed? What does battery registration mean and why is it necessary?

All vehicles have a battery (some have more than one!) to help run the electronic systems, including the starting motor so you can start your engine and drive. When it comes to owning a BMW, MINI, Volkswagen or Audi, there’s an additional step beyond buying a battery and hooking it up to the terminals. You’ll need register the battery to your vehicle because these vehicles have what’s called “intelligent battery sensors” that measure battery voltage, current, temperature and charge. For the battery to be set to optimum level, the system needs to be reset or “registered” when a new battery is installed.

If you elect to just install a new battery without doing the registration, there are a number of things that could go wrong. You could experience overcharging, causing your battery to overheat. Alternatively, you may experience undercharging, which can degrade the plates inside your battery. Either scenario can significantly shorten the life of your battery. You also run the risk of electrical issues like warning lights, blown fuses, and even a no-start condition.

When you’re ready for a new battery for your Audi, Volkswagen, BMW, or MINI, give us a call so we can install and register your battery. You’ll be set up for many miles to come, knowing that this process is done properly at ArborMotion!
